The nerve of some MP’s….

Today, the cross-party Commons hypocrisy health select committee announced that they are now following the SNP Scottish brethren in calling for a minimum pricing on alcohol.

I have almost bored myself to death with the argument — why penalise everyone for the sins of the few — but I will say it one more time….. so apologies. But …

What the hell do you think you are doing penalising everyone for the actions of the few?

Who are the people who came out with this nonsense? According to the official website its these worthy indidividuals…

Member Constituency Party
Rt Hon Kevin Barron (Chairman) Rother Valley Labour
Charlotte Atkins Staffordshire Moorlands Labour
Peter Bone Wellingborough Conservative
Jim Dowd Lewisham West Labour
Sandra Gidley Romsey Liberal Democrats
Stephen Hesford Wirral West Labour
Dr Doug Naysmith Bristol North West Labour
Mr Lee Scott Ilford North Conservative
Dr Howard Stoate Dartford Labour
Robert Syms Poole Conservative
Dr Richard Taylor Wyre Forest Independent

So, the people that have decided that we are a bunch of delinquents who need to be taxed for our own good include…..

Chairman and Labour MP Kevin  Barron …who claimed a London flat in 2004/5 as his second home with a monthly mortgage interest of £1,509, which rose to £1,791 in 2005/6, and to  more than £2,000 the following year.

Charlotte Atkins, Labour MP…who  claimed more than £35,000 in renovations on her second home allowance including £20,000 for windows, £4,000 for the chimney, £9,000 for the bathroom and nearly £2,000 for the garden.

Doug Naysmith, Labour MP… who claimed £3,870 in four years to cover laundry bills and pay for someone to clean his London home.

Howard Stoate, Labour MP who submitted bills for thousands of pounds worth of DIY materials as he spent years doing up his second home.

Robert Syms, Conservative MP… who claimed more than £2,000 worth of furniture on expenses for his designated second home in London, but had it all delivered to his parents’ address in Wiltshire !!…..

……..

Hmmm and these people presume to take the moral high ground telling us what we should and should not spendour own money on. Its almost hilarious.

And whilst I am at it …

When I last looked at this (about a year ago) there were 18 or 19 bars in the Houses of Parliament; none of which were required to stick to any licensing hours;  the bars themselves sold cheap (duty free?) booze. So certainly this time last year, MPs could drink want they wanted, whenever they wanted , and at knock down prices.  (On pretty tasty salaries – and – as we have learned – pretty splendiforous expenses….. )

May be they have changed the gentlemans club that is the Houses of Parliament in the meantime. What ever. My suggestion to these busybodies is go get you own house(s) in order before you come knocking on my door telling me what i should and shouldn’t do.

And, now I am in rant mode, it should be noted that the SNP plans for introducing minimum pricing of alcohol in Scotland is running into all sorts of problems as opposition MP’s stand it its way (three cheers).

I am minded to recall that it was Liberal Vision’s very own Mark Littlewood that took on mad man Kenny Macaskill on this very issue over the border a wee while ago. Here’s a short exerpt…..
