Could Milburn become even more anti-Brown?

Alan Milburn won’t be seeking re-election at the next election.

He wants to pursue other stuff, spend more time with his family etc etc.

But might there be a last parting shot?

Now wholly unshackled from any obligations to back Brown’s dying government, might he even go as far as endorsing another party in 2010?

If Brown clings on until the electorate finally deliver their damning verdict, don’t bet against it.

SDP Mark 2?

Paddy Ashdown has just said that several senior Labour MPs stand ready to break from the Labour Party and link up with the LibDems.

Nick Clegg denies direct involvement in such talks – although Paddy suggests the LD frontbench are abreast of  these developments.

Entirely incidentally, Charles Clarke is “ashamed” to be a Labour MP and Alan Milburn is actually – in many ways – a genuine liberal.

Condemned to live in interesting times….

UPDATE: The Telegraph’s coverage suggests Clegg wants direct defections.
