is Liberal Vision’s own ANDY MAYER!

Is it just me or has Liberal Vision suddenly gone more than a little mainstream? Feels weird. Weird and dirty.

Nice one Andy. Well said.

Nick himself is not in agreement with the polar choices Andy Mayer is suggesting, because Paul Burstow on behalf of the leadership supported the NHS amendments at our last conference.
There was plenty of opportunity during the last Parliament for the party leadership to submit of policy of the marketisation of the NHS.
This did not happen, it is not Lib Dem policy and we did not prepare the electorate that we would support such a policy at the last general election. You cannot expect the party to support this policy because nothing was done to persuade the party to support it in the first place.

Geoff, I’m curious what you mean by ‘marketisation of the NHS’? There are already private companies competing to provide a range of services across the NHS. The reform debate today is about whether that should be extended further and how. I’m glad for example to see Nick Clegg clarify today that competition and collaboration are complementary not opposing forces in respect of improving outcomes for patients.
As to persuading the party, did we not have the Huhne Commission in 2003 that concluded using markets to provide social liberal outcomes across all public services was a good thing?
It is I think slightly sad that the social liberal contribution to this debate is coming across as a conservative defense of national producer interests and the institution of the NHS rather than looking at how we can learn from other systems that achieve better outcomes for patients.
