Well, the “rainbow coalition” option is still mathematically a tall order regardless of who is Prime Minister. And of course we would have the second Prime Minister in a row not to face the electorate as party leader…. I hope this doesn’t turn the heads of the parliamentary party.
It just goes to show that LIb Dems are damned if they do and damned if they don’t. If we try to pull of this rainbow coalition, we will be dead. End of.
I think that Clegg is merely trying to cover his back with the more left-leaning members. He can’t sell a coalition to his party, which is a shame because I don’t think Cameron can sell one to his either.
@mpg: As someone who has been following the internal debate in my local party, I would say that the Lib Dem membership would quite happily accept a coalition with the Tories if it involved substantial progress on electoral reform (e.g. STV in House of Lords and local elections).

Because it’s looking as though Brown is resigning in order to ensure a LibLab pact…
