What it does is to raise the profile of the Liberal Democrats at a time when prior to the general election being called it tends to be a two party affair.

If it turns out that no party has an overall majority the Prime Minister (whoever that turns out to be) might well hesitate to call an early election as he or she would be painted as someone not prepared to accept the will of the people and acting like a spoilt child. Who would be the most likely caandidate for that?
