This was funny a year ago…sadly it still is TODAY…

October 5th, 2009 Posted in Uncategorized by

Most of you will have seen this video- it was first published on You Tube over A YEAR AGO!. But I thought it worth posting again as the Tory conference opens if only because, well, nothing has changed. You would have thought that the collective brains of the Cameron hierachy would have found a way to solve it by now. But as the out-of-date video shows – they are no further forward. One has to ask . When will the Conservatives actually tell us what they are going to do?

When they’ve worked it out. I think the real test will be when the treaty comes into force, because at the moment they can (just about) get away with the “It’s still aliiiiive!” line.

HMM Philip….just WHEN do you think that they will work out what to do?

At the moment we have Boris Johnson declaring that there MUST be a referendum , Lord Brittan saying that it is “politically unwise, ludicrous and impossible” to have a referendum if its been ratified, with Lord Tebbit responding that Lord Brittan’s comments are absurd. MEPs DAniel Hannan and Roger Helmer have declared that we MUST have some sort of referendum on “something Europe” (if not the Treaty then on “Europe more generally”)and accusing Cameron of caprious procrastination…..

Whilst all this is going on Cameron is simply REFUSING to say what his policy will be IF there IS ratification by Poland and Czech republic.

I dont think it reasonable to say “I cant tell you where we will make cuts until we are in power and can see the books” (except fot the infamous “efficiency savings”)… I think it even more unreasonable to say “I wont tell you what I am going to do about Europe if the treaty is ratified before a UK general election”. I cant see any grounds for with holding that information – and the media, the public and especially his own party will keep pressing him on it.

Crikey, two short sentences, modestly critical of the Tories’ inability to come up with a policy ahead of time and noting that they can just about get away with that inability while the policy is unnecessary, generate four paragraphs of rushed, randomly-capitalised diatribe. Did my inability to be viciously critical of a political party touch a raw nerve?

I’m not a Tory, and I’m not a Liberal Democrat. I don’t have a clue when Tory High Command is going to get itself a policy for post-ratification, and I don’t need to pretend otherwise. I don’t much care for the Tories’ lack of policy either, although I suspect that we would vote different ways were a referendum on Lisbon to be held. But whereas some people appear to think that this is a matter of life and death, I just think it’s all rather silly. There are other hypotheticals I can think of — an Iranian nuke, for example — which don’t generate nearly as much vitriol.

  4. Angela Harbutt Says:

Gosh no Philip – no raw nerve – well may be….I am irritated – and with all parties – at their unwillingness to be straight with us. I could say much the same thing about the other parties.

And whilst I think the European matter is important – and no I am not totally sure which way I would vote – I agree that there are some issues much more important.

So apologies if it was a “rushed,randomly-capitalised diatribe” – I just want politicians of all colours to answer the questions (whatever they are).

Thanks, Angela. I forgot to say, the video is very good.
